pewter casting the mold

The soapstone you want is massive talc schist or massive saracite schist. Preferably a marbled green, grey, or red-brown. If it is all white, you're likely to run into trouble when you heat it - it will effectively decompose. The stone carves with any tool you can think of even your nail makes marks in it. we used wood carving and dental tools.
